Camera Body Architecture
Evaluating sensor output against structural chassis mass. Every gram carried daily must justify its existence through photographic utility.
Weight-to-Utility Breakdown
| System Class | Avg. Weight (Body Only) | Sensor Size | Weather Sealing | EDC Viability Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium Compact | 350g - 500g | APS-C / Full Frame | Variable | 9.5/10 |
| Rangefinder-Style APS-C | 380g - 450g | APS-C | High | 8.8/10 |
| SLR-Style Full Frame | 500g - 750g | Full Frame | Excellent | 6.5/10 |
The Ergonomics of Daily Carry
A camera left on the shelf because it's too heavy has a utility score of zero. Modern mirrorless systems have largely solved the bulk issue, but battery grips and heavy cages defeat the purpose of an EDC setup.
When selecting a body, consider the grip depth. A flat rangefinder style slips effortlessly into a 3L sling or jacket pocket. An aggressive right-hand grip, while comfortable for 8-hour wedding shoots, catches on fabric and requires wider, heavier bags.
Battery Density
Newer high-capacity batteries add mass to the body but eliminate the need to carry 3 spares. A net negative in overall bag weight.
