Selecting the Perfect Prime
Zooms offer convenience at the cost of extreme structural bulk. For the EDC photographer, the compact prime lens is the ultimate optical tool.
The Pancake Advantage
Optical designs measuring less than 1 inch in length transform an interchangeable lens camera into a jacket-pocketable powerhouse. Compromises in edge sharpness are vastly outweighed by the sheer frequency with which you will carry the camera.
Standard Compact Primes
The f/2 or f/2.5 series of primes strike the best balance. They are weather-sealed, focus instantly, and feature metal chassis, all while remaining under 200 grams.
Focal Length Breakdown
Your chosen focal length dictates your engagement with the environment.
28mm: The Environmental Documentarian
Forces you into the action. Exceptional for narrow streets, interiors, and contextual portraits. Highly forgiving regarding zone focusing.
35mm: The Classic Storyteller
The gold standard for everyday carry. Wide enough for context, tight enough to isolate subjects without severe distortion.
50mm: The Isolator
Excellent for details and traditional portraits. However, it can feel restrictive indoors or in tight urban alleyways.
